California Mid-Winter Fair and Fiesta 2020 Part 2

__________________________________________

When you walk down the main entry to the fair you will immediately see the School Exhibits building, it was so full of student projects and themed artwork. I posted those photos last week.

The Hulsienda Building where the adult art, crafts, and foods are displayed followed that building and I went in quite a bit as I love to see the other paintings and photography that the adults brought in this year. I had a favorite artist last year, Susan M. I was delighted that she brought in more pieces this year as well, she is so talented, and her work is bright and full of color!

There was the Preble building with all of the Imperial Union High School District Students “Have a Moment of Science” area. That is such a fun place for kids and adults to visit, you can play a song on a homemade PVC pipe organ, or make smoke rings in a smoke cannon, learn about a Bell fountain, and watch ants at work. There so many hands-on activities, the families could spend a long time playing. Plus, the High Schoolers were there at each activity to help answer questions about their projects worked.
There were police, and fire, rescue, and some political booths there to help the kids get checked in and safety bracelets, and talk about each of their agencies.

There was also a gorgeous butterfly garden inside, I got to feed the butterflies as I mentioned, and we watched Karla go inside of the garden and help teach the families and children about the Little Painted Ladies.  How they feed and camouflage themselves for protection, how they fly and rest.

The Gem and Mineral Society had so many volunteers inside helping you pan for gold, make a wish at the fountain on the wall, and they even made up a game for us. We paid $1.00 and got to choose 3 slips of paper from the tree and then take them to the rock tray in exchange for some really neat little rocks. I got white, pink and purple. I also bought a grab bag full of rocks and shark teeth!

The Plaza de las Culturales had some make a take banks and statues for the kids to paint, as well as art made from wood, bottle cap jewelry, paintings, leather belts and purses, there were homemade books and jams, honey and bows for your hair. All brought in from all over the US and Mexico, there were so many beautiful pieces. I got new earrings and a necklace made from Jalisco.

The Casa de Mañana building had all of the commercial vendors. Things like the local newspaper or clothing items, gifts, glass wear, jewelry boxes, and jerseys, it is a lot of fun to window shop in there.

They also had the Discovery Zone for the families to play the games and puzzles. Families don't have to spend huge amounts of money to have fun at the fair. These activities are all free, and inside of the building, with tables and chairs for the comfort of the parents and guests.

Th last building I visited was the Inspiration Gallery, the students from 4H and high school worked on wooden projects, welding, Lego creations, flowers, photography, and canning projects. I found a favorite couple of pieces here, I love to see their ingenuity.

I finally got to see Dennis ride his Penny-farthing and make balloons for the kids. They enjoy seeing his smile and wave, and talk to them as he makes the little balloon animals.

__________________________________________

I got to see The Stilt Circus perform in the tunnel, Alex was so great with the kids, teaching them to juggle and balance sticks on their hands and fingers, and juggling for them.

Washboard Willy played his music all over the fairgrounds, bringing his wagon of instruments out for the kids to join in and play as his little band, they had so much fun playing the tambourines and drums, and maracas, and even a kid-sized washboard!

This fair is so much fun, there is something to do at every corner and in all of the buildings.
It is fun to go inside and see what they have in store for us year after year.

California Mid-Winter Fair and Fiesta

California Mid-Winter Fair and Fiesta
February 28 - March 8, 2020
_______________________

I like to find unique things that set fairs apart from each other, and the California Mid-Winter fair can boast that they have one of the largest arts and crafts displays. In fact they have two full buildings dedicated to the arts and crafts, one for all of the school children who are always making art based on the theme of the fair, and one for the adults arts, crafts, quilts, and food displays.

There are so many creative displays to enjoy, I love how each piece portrayed the theme in their own unique style.

When you walk in, this fair has pony rides and a children's inflatable play area right at the entrance.

Washboard Willy  was entertaining the line of people as they waited to come into the fairgrounds. I love to listen to him sing, he has cover songs and originals, he is a terrific one man band.

There is a butterfly house at this fair and I just had to go in and feed the butterflies, they are so gorgeous and delicate. This one is called a Painted Lady, we visited a long time, and I enjoyed the quiet room and for a moment that time stood still and I could just enjoy the moment.

We got to watch the Flat Track & TT Motorcycle Racing, there were cars and motorcycles it was fun rooting them on as they went around the track.

We got a special treat, Godfrey the Magician did both stage shows and strolling shows. I love watching him give the kids magic lessons after the shows, he gets them excited about magic and encourages them to go to their local or school library and read magic books. The shows are completely different from each other, the stage show has a lot of lager magic while the strolling magic is right in the guests hands!

The fair always has fun foods to try, and Helm and Sons Amusement, the company that brought in the rides, also brought in food, and these adorable Unicorn Apples.
We settled on Street tacos and cucumber refresher from a nearby vendor.  Hubby tried the pineapple refresher and was delighted with the flavor and thick pulp.

The Checker’d Past concert was the best! They play the 80's, MTV music, back from the music MTV days (I sure do miss that) and then the New Wave Music. That makes two hours of heaven, I love singing along.

Part Two of this fair is going to be a more in depth view of the buildings that they offer, The Plaza De Las Culturas, Doc's building, make and take projects, and dancers, STEM projects, Gems and Minerals, Youth Projects, and a Sip and Sip.
Please come back soon!
